The technique taught in this course is a stencil technique for printing on fabric, that uses the layering of stencils and a variety of brush techniques that give depth to your prints and are perfect for making nature inspired prints and patterns.

 

There is so much nature inspiration around in the beautiful gardens of West Dean. We will look at plants and trees, as well as at natural textures in water, clouds, lichen etc.

After getting familiar with the stencil making and the stencil printing techniques that we will use, we will go outside and spend some hours sketching, getting ideas on paper that we will use as inspiration for prints.

 

We will then study the multiple ways to transform a sketch into a simple or a layered design that can be stencil printed. You will be able to make beautiful prints and patterns regardless of your sketching and printing experience.

 

The second part of the workshop will be spent in printing the designs on fabric to take home with you, to turn into a cushion of a small wall hanging or other project.

 

Going home from this course you will have a skill that you will be able to continue practicing at home at your kitchen table. The supplies that you will need are quite simple and you get to take the brushes with you that you have used during the course, as well as a supply list to use to get the rest of your own supplies at home.

 

The course is suitable for complete beginners and can also be taken by artists and designers who want to learn a new skill.
